Alexis Kimbel – The Grizzly

Vaughn Di Battista ([email protected])

It’s been about two years since Cafe 2020 debuted at Ursinus College, and it’s safe to say it’s a student favorite. It’s the perfect place for an iced coffee, a hot pastry, and a huge selection of flatbreads and paninis. Every day, you can find a line outside the bookstore full of low-energy students chomping at the bit to get their fix. With the recent success of Cafe 2020, most of us tend to look past the faces behind the operation. It’s easy to take Cafe 2020’s work for granted, however, there’s someone to credit their success. Who’s the smile behind our coffee? Who is the nice talker who gives us our tea? That would be Alexis Kimble.

Alexis Kimble is the 2020 Cafe Supervisor. She specializes in food, catering, and putting smiles on customers’ faces. Not a day goes by that Alexis doesn’t come to work wanting to serve the students of Ursinus College.

“I would like to start by saying, you guys drink a lot of coffee!” exclaimed Kimbel after a lunch rush. “It’s a very dynamic environment, and I just love it because of that. I see most students 4 or 5 days a week and enjoy getting to know them and hearing about their experiences on campus.

Kimbel describes herself as a team player, working with a large number of employees eager to provide Collegeville with much-needed energy. She also describes herself as a risk taker, as she took on the challenge of leading her own team two years ago.

She began her journey as a caterer for Sodexo, a provider of catering and hospitality services. Amid the lack of catering opportunities during the Covid-19 pandemic, he was asked to be a supervisor at Cafe 2020. “Excited and nervous, I walked into the cafe two weeks before opening to take the training Starbucks. I had a great chef and manager at Starbucks at the time to help me adapt and learn everything I needed. I am very grateful to them because Cafe 2020 was truly a success.

Kimbel has been with the cafe since it opened in 2020 and has done a very successful job of bringing together a strong group of student employees who have praised their respected supervisor. “Alexis came to work every day with a smile on her face. Even on the darkest days, she was always looking to brighten things up,” former employee Jason Kleintz ’23 said. “Whether it’s a new coffee recipe or a little chat, she always brightens our day.”

With her continued success at Cafe 2020, Kimbel is looking to earn a promotion. His goal is to become a retail manager at Sodexo, or possibly open his own cafe. Although we would hate to see her go, we wish her well in whatever ventures she chooses to pursue.

Next time you’re looking for high quality coffee, or even higher quality conversation, Alexis Kimbel has you covered.
