F&B sales up 40.1% year-on-year in May after strict dining rules scrapped

After the removal of dining restrictions, food and beverage (F&B) sales generated $910 million, which rose 40.1% year-over-year in May 2022, according to data from the Department of Statistics (DOS).

Explaining the significant growth in May 2022, DOS said it was on the back of removing strict dine-in measures from May last year, with dine-in at food establishments not permitted.

It was also higher than the 11.6% Growth in F&B sales in April 2022, which grossed a total sales value of $815 million.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, F&B sales increased 7.9% in May 2022 from the previous month. Of this amount, online F&B sales accounted for more than 24.4%, down from 26.7% recorded in April 2022.

At the same time, demand for event and in-flight catering services and the reopening of borders drove food caterer sales growth of 101.6%.

Other F&B segments also grew, with restaurant sales up 66%, cafes and food courts 25% and fast food outlets 13.8%.
