Multi-purpose sports facility to meet the aspirations of Chennai’s youth | Chennai News

A free multipurpose sports facility will be set up at Radhakrishnan Nagar in North Chennai by the municipality. Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan said it will have facilities for volleyball, badminton, basketball, boxing, kabaddi and indoor games, as well as one gymnasium in 4 .7 acres in Ward 41 near “Sunnambu Kalvai”.
DMK’s JJ Ebenezer, who made the proposal to the state assembly, said the area’s residents’ biggest demand was for a sports facility. “This locality has a lot of boxers and athletes, but they can’t afford to go to private complexes and academies,” he told TOI.
A team has begun to identify the land and remove all encroachments near the Buckingham Canal. “I drew drawings with my team and presented them to the commissioner of the corporation. I also shared it with the leader of the youth wing Udhayanidhi Stalin. Later it was brought to the attention of CM. Now it’s announced in the budget,” he said.
The facility, which will operate from morning to night, will help young people from disadvantaged communities to participate in more sports competitions, he added. Sports coaches in the region said it would go a long way in training young people for national events, even the Olympics. J Logachandran, founding trainer of King Makers Boxing Academy in Vyasarpadi, said the decision was made with futuristic thinking. “Now we can mobilize young people and organize tournaments for free. Accompanied by gym equipment, it is an ideal setting for a complete sports package.
