Nanjing baby food company receives award for promoting ASC-certified seafood

A Chinese company that caters to the lucrative mother and infant market has been recognized by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) with an award for promoting awareness of certified sustainable seafood.

Nanjing-based Megzhu Network Technology Co. received the “Best Maternal and Child Seafood Partner” award at a recent ASC China event recognizing local companies that have adopted and promoted ASC certification. Salmon and other seafood species have become popular products in the functional food market – itself a major driver of seafood consumption in China – with many sellers on major e-commerce sites Chinese who package and market cuts of salmon as nutritionally beneficial to children.

Founded in 2016, Megzhu Network Technology operates stores on major e-commerce platforms in China. With its wide range of packaged food products and smartphone apps for parents, the company has notably taken a prominent place in the growing Chinese baby food market. The company is described by ASC as “the first franchised maternal and infant nutrition company to promote ASC-certified seafood products to younger generation parents in this rapidly growing market.”

At the event, ASC also presented awards to Shandong Lighthouse Jellyfish Marine Technology Co., which sought to tap into the Chinese market for premium oysters, pitting its local production against imports from France, New Zealand and the United States. “Outstanding Partner Award for Chinese Online Seafood Market” in recognition of the company’s ASC certified oyster becoming a “Premium Brand” in the Chinese online market.

Huitaibohai Seafood Co. has been named by ASC as an “Outstanding Partner for China’s Retail Seafood Market” for the company’s efforts to support ASC’s seafood supply chain and efforts consumer promotion in the supermarket chain Olé and Ikea China.

The winner in the “Offshore Marine Ecological Aquaculture Pioneer Enterprise Award” category was Shandong Nanhuangcheng Marine Technology Co. The company is “the first pilot enterprise to develop [a] management system and technical indicators of their equipped offshore aquaculture platform using ASC standards as technical requirements,” ASC said in its citation.
